William Leith, born 14 October 1854 in Banchory Devenick, Scotland was a person I wanted to find out more about. I had obtained his birth details from parish records on FamilySearch, but had no other details.
An evening of research on Scotlands People for marriage and death records, Ancestry.com for census records, and FamilySearch for further birth registration records established the following additional information.
William married Jemima Cumming Ewen (1856-1947), daughter of Robert Ewen (a crofter) and Ann Swanson, on 3 April 1879 in Portlethen. The couple had at least four children: William in 1888, Douglas in 1890, Mary in 1892, and Violet in 1895. I have not found the 1891 census information for the family yet, so there could be older children, born between 1880 and 1888.
William was a gamekeeper when he married, and he also gave this as his occupation in the 1901 census. In 1901 William and his family lived at Dunnottar Square (gamekeepers House), in Dunnottar near Stonehaven.
I have now discovered he worked at a very interesting location. Dunnottar Castle is a ruined medieval fortress located nearby.
